Be careful with this advice.

When I got mono that gave me MECFS and my doctor couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me she sent me to the psychiatrist. I was pretty mad about it because I knew it wasn’t mental illness but I figured if I was doing this to myself I was really sick and I really needed help so I should see this man. After listening to me talk for a half hour he handed me a lab slip for a mono test and he told me I had mono but I could come back if I wanted to, but I didn’t need him. And he was right.

But because I kept trying to go back to work, and then crashing and going out of work, then trying to go back because I was told there was nothing wrong with me, I ended up with the MECFS and I’ve been disabled for 12 years now.

So on one hand it could be really validating to have a psychiatrist tell you that you’re not mentally ill. But it’s a gamble, because if they decide you are every doctor you see going forward is going to default to “it’s your mental illness”.

This is another reason why I object to taking mental health medication off label for other things, like pain for example. They see mental health medication in your profile, and the default is “mental illness”for anything they can’t diagnose or fix in the 7-15 minutes you are sitting in front of them.

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS.
